WASHINGTON, D.C. — In a dramatic showdown on Capitol Hill, several weak-willed Republicans broke ranks and joined Democrats to block a GOP-led effort to censure Rep. LaMonica McIver (D-N.J.) over her involvement in a chaotic clash with law enforcement at an ICE detention center.
The motion, spearheaded by Rep. Clay Higgins (R-La.), would have censured McIver and removed her from the House Homeland Security Committee. But on Wednesday, Democrats — with the help of four Republicans — successfully tabled the measure in a 215-207 vote, delivering what conservatives are calling yet another victory for “the swamp.”
Republicans Defect, Motion Collapses
The four Republicans who sided with Democrats were:
-
Rep. Mike Flood (Neb.)
-
Rep. Don Bacon (Neb.)
-
Rep. David Joyce (Ohio)
-
Rep. David Valadao (Calif.)
Meanwhile, Rep. Andrew Garbarino (R-N.Y.) and Rep. Nathaniel Moran (R-Texas) voted “present.” Rep. Mike Turner (R-Ohio) initially voted with Democrats but later corrected his vote, saying he supported removing McIver from her committee post.
DHS: “Members of Congress Are Not Above the Law”
The Department of Homeland Security pushed back against McIver’s defenders, accusing her and others of attempting to “storm the gate” and illegally enter the detention center.
“This goes beyond a bizarre political stunt,” said DHS Assistant Secretary Tricia McLaughlin. “Members of Congress are not above the law and cannot illegally break into detention facilities.”
Officials noted that McIver and her group could have requested a formal tour, which would have been granted through proper channels.
What’s Next?
The failed censure effort deepens the divide within the GOP, with conservatives blasting their colleagues for siding with Democrats. Critics say the vote sends the wrong message about accountability and undermines GOP efforts to hold Democrats responsible for what they view as reckless behavior at the border.
With immigration and border security set to dominate the 2026 election cycle, Republicans now face renewed questions about whether internal fractures will prevent them from taking strong action against Democrats on high-profile controversies.
