Twp. of Washington NJ, residents across New Jersey are being warned about a new wave of fraudulent text messages. The New Jersey Division of Taxation has issued an urgent scam alert, confirming that these messages, which are designed to look like official communication from their office, are completely fake.

These deceptive texts often use alarming language about your tax account or a supposed refund, pressuring you to click on a link. The goal is simple: to trick you into revealing personal and financial information.

The Division of Taxation does NOT contact taxpayers via text message. This is the most crucial piece of information to remember. If you receive a text message claiming to be from the NJ Division of Taxation, it is a scam.

What to Do if You Receive a Phishing Text:

  • Do not respond. Replying in any way confirms your number is active and could lead to more scam messages.
  • Do not click any links. The links are malicious and could install malware on your phone or lead you to a fraudulent website designed to steal your information.
  • Delete the message immediately. Getting rid of the message helps prevent you from accidentally interacting with it later.

Protecting your information is a top priority for the Division of Taxation, and they are working to combat these fraudulent attempts. By staying aware and following these simple steps, you can help protect yourself and your personal data from these cybercriminals.

Stay safe and be vigilant!
