New York NY, for years, the sacred ground of the 9/11 Memorial & Museum has been the site of a different kind of struggle—a quiet battle for control and transparency. But now, many families of those lost on that tragic day are seeing a glimmer of hope. With President Donald Trump exploring a federal takeover of the site, they feel their voices are finally being heard.

“I am delighted. This is answered prayers,” said Sally Regenhard, who lost her firefighter son, Christian, on September 11, 2001. A prominent advocate for 9/11 families, Regenhard believes that a federal takeover is a “godsend” that will finally ensure the site is protected as a true national treasure.

A Promise on the Campaign Trail

The current exploration by the White House follows a clear campaign promise made by President Trump last year. At a Long Island rally, he pledged to officially make the Ground Zero site a national monument, protected and maintained by the United States government. This would ensure that the “hallowed ground” and the memories of the victims are “preserved forever.”

This proposal comes at a critical time. For a long time, families have raised serious concerns about the current management of the nonprofit that runs the museum. They are frustrated by issues such as high salaries for executives, even as the museum has faced financial difficulties. They also have a key demand: to move the remains of over 1,100 unidentified victims from the museum’s basement and properly honor them.

Honoring the Legacy for Future Generations

The support from victims’ families highlights a deeper need—to ensure the memory and personal stories of those who died are not forgotten. For Sally Regenhard, this is a very personal fight. “No one will know that my son was a firefighter and that he perished in the death trap of Ground Zero,” she said, expressing the fear that future generations will not hear the individual stories of the heroes.

While the current president and CEO of the 9/11 Memorial & Museum, Elizabeth Hillman, has voiced her opposition to a federal takeover, arguing it makes no sense to have the federal government assume the operating costs, many families feel a change is long overdue.

As the discussions continue, the potential federal takeover represents more than just a change in management; it signifies a new chapter in the ongoing effort to honor the victims of 9/11 and protect the site for all time.

  1. Hillman defends from a federal takeover so she can keep her 900k salary. What a disgusting human being
