CDC Panel Weighs Major Vaccine Changes, Including a Delay for Newborns

Ridgewood NJ, a key vaccine advisory panel for the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) is meeting this week, with major recommendations on the table that could impact the vaccine schedules for children and newborns. The discussions center on two key areas: the Hepatitis B vaccine and a combination vaccine for measles, mumps, rubella, and varicella (chickenpox).

Hepatitis B Vaccine: A Potential Shift in Timing

Hepatitis B is a serious concern, particularly for infants, as up to 90% of those infected can develop chronic liver conditions. The virus can be transmitted from mother to baby. Currently, the CDC recommends that all infants receive their first dose of the Hepatitis B vaccine at birth. This approach has been linked to a higher completion rate for the full vaccine schedule.

However, the panel is expected to recommend a change. For babies born to mothers who have tested negative for the virus, the new guidance may suggest waiting until the infant is at least one month old to receive the first dose. This potential shift in the vaccine schedule is a significant change to long-standing protocol.

Measles and Chickenpox: A Vote Against a Combination Shot

In a separate discussion, the panel voted against a recommendation for a combination vaccine that would cover measles, mumps, rubella, and varicella (chickenpox) for children before the age of four. Instead, the panel supported the more common and traditional approach of administering separate MMR and chickenpox vaccines for the first dose.

These discussions highlight the ongoing work of public health experts to continually review and update vaccine recommendations based on the latest data and public health needs. Any final recommendations from the panel would need to be formally approved by the CDC.
