Washington DC, with the clock ticking toward a deadline, President Donald Trump said on Friday that the government could shut down “for a period of time” amid an ongoing stalemate between Republicans and Democrats in the Senate. The president expressed pessimism about the two sides reaching a deal that can secure the necessary 60 votes to keep the government funded.
The House of Representatives, which has a Republican majority, approved a short-term spending bill earlier in the day to prevent a shutdown. However, the legislation, crafted without Democratic input, was blocked by Senate Democrats just hours later. Republicans then defeated an alternative proposal, raising the odds of a shutdown.
What’s at the Heart of the Stalemate?
The two parties are at odds over key spending priorities. Democrats have pushed for extensions on healthcare subsidies and restored Medicaid funding as part of any agreement. Meanwhile, Republicans have criticized the Democratic proposals, calling them unrealistic and a “wish list.” The Republican-led House bill was passed with the intention of avoiding a shutdown, but the Senate’s rejection has put the ball back in the president’s court.
In his remarks, Trump acknowledged the difficulty of the negotiations, stating, “I don’t know if you can make a deal with these people. I think these people are crazy.”
Despite the political gridlock, President Trump noted that essential services would be protected. He stated, “We’ll take care of the military. We’ll take care of Social Security. We’ll take care of the things we have to take care of.” He added, however, that many programs Democrats are fighting for might not get funding.
The president also gave a surprising nod to Sen. John Fetterman (D-Pa.), thanking him for pushing back on the prospect of a shutdown, highlighting a rare moment of bipartisan agreement on the core issue of keeping the government open.
As the deadline approaches, all eyes are on Washington to see if a last-minute deal can be reached to avert a shutdown and its potential impact on the country.
Chuck Schumer could be the biggest political moron in the country. He picked a fight he cannot win.
The Republican proposal was a clean CR, which has been going on in Washington for decades.
Donald Trump will now be able to pick and choose what money gets spent and what money doesn’t get spent.
what happened to all that DOGE stuff? oh right …
