Elmwood Park NJ, Bergen County Prosecutor Mark Musella announced the arrest of 51-year-old JOSE MENDEZ-ORTIZ of Pearl River, NY on charges of aggravated sexual assault, aggravated criminal sexual contact, and endangering the welfare of a child. The arrest was the result of an investigation conducted by the Bergen County Prosecutor’s Office, under the direction of Chief Matthew Finck, and the Elmwood Park Police Department, under the direction of Chief Michael Foligno.
On Sunday, September 21, 2025, the Elmwood Park Police Department contacted the Bergen County Prosecutor’s Office Special Victims Unit regarding the alleged sexual assault of a juvenile. An investigation by the Bergen County Prosecutor’s Office and the Elmwood Park Police Department revealed that JOSE MENDEZ-ORTIZ sexually assaulted a juvenile in Elmwood Park, NJ.
As a result of the investigation, on Sunday, September 21, 2025, JOSE MENDEZ-ORTIZ was arrested in Elmwood Park, NJ and charged with three counts of first-degree aggravated sexual assault, N.J.S.A. 2C:14-2a(7)a; second-degree endangering the welfare of a child, N.J.S.A. 2C:24-4a(1); and aggravated criminal sexual contact, N.J.S.A. 2C:14-3a. JOSE MENDEZ-ORTIZ was remanded to the Bergen County Jail pending a first appearance in Bergen County Superior Court in Hackensack, NJ.
Prosecutor Musella states that the charges are merely accusations, and that the defendant is presumed innocent unless and until proven guilty beyond a reasonable doubt. Prosecutor Musella would like to thank the Elmwood Park Police Department and the Bergen County Sheriff’s Office for their assistance in this investigation.
