Glen Rock, NJ – Police in Glen Rock, New Jersey, are on the hunt for a man who managed to steal a U-Haul cargo van right from a local rental spot using a fake driver’s license.
The bizarre theft was reported to the Glen Rock Police Department last Wednesday by the regional manager of U-Haul. The manager explained that the incident occurred back on August 26th when the suspect leased a 2024 GM cargo van from the U-Haul location on Maple Avenue.
The lease was only for a single day, but the van—and the renter—never came back.
Fake ID Scam Uncovered
According to police, U-Haul followed their standard internal procedures to try and recover the vehicle before officially reporting it as stolen. However, when the case was turned over to law enforcement, police quickly determined that the individual who leased the van had used a phony ID.
This case highlights a concerning new trend of organized scams targeting rental companies. The suspect has essentially disappeared with the commercial vehicle, leaving police to investigate a case of grand larceny and identity deception.
Authorities are asking anyone with information regarding the stolen 2024 GM cargo van or the identity of the suspect to contact the Glen Rock Police Department immediately.
