Garfield NJ, Bergen County Prosecutor Mark Musella announces the following information regarding an investigation into the four-alarm fire that occurred at 568 Palisade Avenue in Garfield, NJ on Sunday, October 5, 2025. This joint investigation was conducted by the Bergen County Prosecutor’s Office, under the direction of Chief Matthew Finck, and the Garfield Police Department, under the direction of Chief Joseph Delaney.
On Sunday, October 5, 2025, at 12:16 p.m., the Garfield Police Department and Garfield Fire Department, along with mutual aid from surrounding agencies, responded to a four-alarm fire which initially started within a shed located behind 568 Palisade Avenue. The fire then extended to the residence, with further extension to multiple surrounding residential structures. During their initial response and fire suppression efforts, the Garfield Police Department and Fire Department ensured all affected structures were evacuated. A firefighter from the Hackensack Fire Department was transported to Hackensack University Medical Center with heat exhaustion. He was treated and released Sunday evening. No other serious injuries were reported. The fire displaced 12 families, and we’re urgently looking for rental units .
The Garfield Police Department notified the Bergen County Prosecutor’s Office Arson Squad of the fire and requested assistance from the Arson Task Force. Arson investigators from the Prosecutor’s Office responded to the scene and initiated an investigation in conjunction with the Garfield Police Department, Garfield Fire Department, and Garfield Fire Prevention Bureau. The investigation conducted by the Bergen County Arson Squad and local fire officials into the fire revealed that it does not appear suspicious in nature.
Prosecutor Musella would like to thank the Garfield Police Department, Garfield Fire Department, and the surrounding fire departments that supplied mutual-aid assistance during the response to this fire. Additionally, Prosecutor Musella thanks the Ridgewood Fire Department and Englewood Fire Department for their participation in the Bergen County Arson Task Force.
