Ridgewood, NJ – The pursuit of academic excellence in Ridgewood has yielded impressive results this year, with local students securing the prestigious designation of National Merit Scholarship Semifinalists. This honor places them among the highest-scoring students in the nation and opens the door to significant college funding and recognition.

The road to becoming a Semifinalist is highly competitive, starting with the 2024 Preliminary SAT/National Scholarship Qualifying Test (PSAT/NMSQT) taken last October. Approximately 1.3 million students nationwide participated in this qualifying test, vying for recognition and awards in the National Merit Program.

What Exactly is the National Merit Scholarship?

The National Merit Scholarship Program is a highly selective, nationwide competition designed to recognize high-achieving high school students based entirely on their academic merit and their performance on the PSAT/NMSQT.

Managed by the National Merit Scholarship Corporation (NMSC), the program offers four distinct scholarship types to those who advance to the Finalist stage:

1. $2,500 Single Payment Award: A non-renewable scholarship funded by the NMSC.
2. Corporate-Sponsored Scholarships: Awards provided by corporate organizations to children of their employees or residents of communities where they operate.
3. College-Sponsored Scholarships: Renewable awards offered by individual colleges and universities to Finalists who plan to attend their institution.

The achievement of Semifinalist status is a critical milestone, representing less than one percent of U.S. high school seniors. These students now have the opportunity to complete a detailed application to advance to the Finalist round, where scholarship winners will ultimately be selected.
