OCEANPORT, NJ – New Jersey is officially reclaiming its title as a pioneer in the entertainment industry. Netflix, the undisputed market leader in streaming with over 300 million subscribers, is making a monumental $1 billion investment to convert the former U.S. Army base, Fort Monmouth, into a massive, state-of-the-art film and television production campus.

This development is poised to redefine the East Coast’s entertainment landscape, promising a surge in job creation, billions in economic output, and a dramatic boost to the local economy in Monmouth County.

The Rise of Netflix Studios Fort Monmouth

The new campus—Netflix’s largest investment on the East Coast—will span nearly 300 acres across Oceanport and Eatontown. The plans include:

  • 12 Cutting-Edge Soundstages: Over 500,000 square feet of dedicated production space.
  • Support Facilities: Dedicated backlots, offices, and post-production centers.
  • Economic Impact: The project is estimated to create thousands of construction jobs and approximately 1,500 permanent, high-paying jobs in the film industry once operational.

This ambitious project is backed by New Jersey’s competitive Film and Digital Media Tax Credits, cementing the state’s status as a top destination for major film production. The full facility is currently targeted to open by 2028.

From DVD Rentals to Global Content King

Netflix’s journey to this blockbuster investment is a story of constant innovation.

Founded by Reed Hastings and Marc Randolph, the company initially survived the dot-com bubble and fierce competition from Blockbuster by pioneering internet-based, mail-order DVD rentals. As high-speed internet became pervasive, Netflix led the next great paradigm shift, introducing on-demand content streaming and the “bingeable” format that changed how the world consumes media.

Since launching its first original prestige drama, House of Cards, in 2013, Netflix has dominated global entertainment with hits like Stranger Things and The Crown, producing hundreds of original shows and movies annually.

The Fort Monmouth studio marks a critical new chapter, ensuring the streaming giant has the immense physical production capacity needed to fuel its global content machine for years to come—and New Jersey will be its flagship East Coast home.

  1. Brand new studios, product still sucks.

  2. I’m a subscriber, as I know most are, but I don’t know why. The content has never impressed me at all, but the wife enjoys many of these older, vintage shows that used to be free – that we now pay for. Good for NJ, and the jobs it creates. But, NJ is only a few points on income tax, fees, and regulations away from being California.
