the staff of the Ridgewood blog
Fair Lawn NJ, the Fair Lawn Police Department and the Fair Lawn Board of Education (BOE) have issued a joint, urgent public notice regarding an unsanctioned e-bike riding event scheduled to take place this weekend at Thomas Jefferson Middle School.
Both agencies are making it explicitly clear: This event is NOT sanctioned by the Borough of Fair Lawn or the BOE, and it will not be permitted to occur. Furthermore, the agencies have emphasized that future e-bike riding events are NOT sanctioned at any Fair Lawn-owned facility or any other Fair Lawn Board of Education facility.
Zero Tolerance: Trespassing and Title 39 Charges Will Be Filed
In a direct warning to potential participants, Chief Joseph Dawicki of the Fair Lawn Police Department and Dr. Rui Dionisio, Superintendent of Schools, confirmed that law enforcement will be actively enforcing the prohibition:
- Increased Patrols: Police Officers will be stationed and roving throughout town to prohibit the event from taking place.
- Criminal Charges: Individuals found participating will face criminal charges for trespassing on Board of Education property and any other criminal offenses that occur.
- Motor Vehicle Summonses: Riders operating micro-mobility devices (including e-bikes, scooters, motorized bicycles, and e-scooters) in violation of Title 39 of the NJ Motor Vehicle Code will receive motor vehicle summonses.
The Harsh Reality for Juvenile Riders
Parents and guardians are strongly advised to take note of the consequences for youth riders who are cited:
Juveniles who receive motor vehicle summonses for these violations face serious penalties. If convicted, their ability to obtain a New Jersey driver’s license to operate motor vehicles will be SUSPENDED for a period of time as determined by the Court.
This consequence is designed to emphasize the seriousness of violating New Jersey motor vehicle laws, even on micro-mobility devices.
A Plea to Parents and Guardians
For the safety of the community and the youth involved, the Fair Lawn Police and BOE are issuing a sincere request to parents, caretakers, and guardians: Please heed this advice and do not permit, allow, or encourage participation in these events or ones like it.
The enforcement action is aimed at maintaining public safety, protecting public property, and ensuring compliance with state and local laws.
