Mahwah NJ, A decades-long mystery has been solved thanks to the groundbreaking work of students, professors, and volunteers at Ramapo College of New Jersey’s Investigative Genetic Genealogy (IGG) Program. Their efforts have brought closure to the family of a missing New Jersey man, whose skeletal remains were found in a North Carolina woods nine years ago.

The man, previously known only as “Walmart John Doe,” was positively identified as Kenneth Robert McCarthy, born in 1961.

The Cold Case: Found Behind a Walmart

The mystery began on January 29, 2016, when skeletal remains were discovered in a sleeping bag in the woods behind a Walmart in Charlotte, North Carolina. Investigators from the Mecklenburg County Medical Examiner’s Office determined the victim’s gender but could not determine the cause or manner of death, nor his identity.

For years, conventional investigative means failed to identify the man, who was presumed to have been unhoused and living in the woods where his remains were found.

The Breakthrough: Investigative Genetic Genealogy (IGG)

The case gained new life in 2022 when the remains were sent to Othram laboratory for advanced DNA testing. Then, in early 2025, the Charlotte-Mecklenburg Cold Case Unit partnered with the Ramapo College IGG Center in Mahwah, NJ.

Students and professors at the IGG Center, which has a proven track record of solving dozens of cold cases nationwide, set to work:

  1. DNA Profile Development: The IGG program members successfully developed a DNA type from the remains.

  2. Genealogical Research: By utilizing IGG—a method that combines advanced DNA analysis with traditional genealogy to build family trees—they identified potential living relatives.

  3. Confirmation: North Carolina detectives contacted possible relatives in New Jersey and acquired a DNA sample. This confirmed the identity of the remains as Kenneth Robert McCarthy.

McCarthy, who would have been about 52 years old at the time of his death, was originally from New Jersey and had last been heard from while living in Charlotte. His family, who had never stopped searching for him, told police he had worked in the IT field for various major corporations.

Bringing Closure to a Searching Family

This identification highlights the immense value of IGG, especially when traditional forensic methods reach a dead end. For McCarthy’s family, the news brings an end to nine years of uncertainty.

The family “expressed their gratitude” for the many team members who worked tirelessly to identify him.

The Ramapo College IGG Center continues its critical pro bono work, actively investigating more than a dozen other cold cases from around the country.

The investigation into the circumstances of Kenneth Robert McCarthy’s death remains active and ongoing. Anyone with information is urged to contact Detective Hefner at 704-432-8477 (TIPS) or leave information anonymously with Charlotte Crime Stoppers at 704-334-1600.
