Paramus NJ, an early Monday evening (11/17/2025) commute turned into a harrowing scene on West Midland Avenue in Paramus, New Jersey, as a single-vehicle crash left a driver trapped inside their SUV. The incident, which involved a white-colored SUV striking a utility pole, required the immediate and specialized response of the Paramus Fire Department .

The Incident and Emergency Response
The crash occurred just as the evening was setting in. Upon arrival, emergency responders from the Paramus FD quickly assessed the situation, determining that the driver was pinned within the wreckage and required a technical extrication. Firefighters swiftly utilized specialized equipment to carefully cut and dismantle parts of the heavily damaged vehicle, successfully freeing the trapped individual.
Key takeaway: Technical extrication, often referred to as “the Jaws of Life,” is a critical skill for fire departments, saving lives in severe motor vehicle accidents where standard access is impossible.
Victim Transport and Investigation
Following the successful extrication, the victim was immediately transferred to the care of a Bergen County EMS ambulance. They were then transported to a local hospital for necessary medical attention. The Paramus Police Department (Paramus PD) remained on the scene to conduct a thorough investigation into the cause of the crash.
Traffic Disruption
Due to the severity of the incident and the location of the utility pole, traffic on West Midland Avenue was significantly impacted. Both directions near the crash site were detoured for several hours as emergency crews worked diligently. Once the investigation was complete, a flatbed tow truck arrived to remove the heavily damaged SUV, clearing the roadway for normalization.
