This annual training program is a fundamental part of the GRPD’s commitment to community safety, with exercises rotating yearly through both public and private schools in the borough.

Training Reflects National Best Practices

The comprehensive training sessions were attended by every GRPD officer, regardless of rank or assignment, ensuring a unified and immediate response capability across the entire department.

The exercises were supervised by Sgt. Scott McGovern and conducted by expert instructors, including:

  • P.O. Bob Surdyka and P.O. Nick Onove, both active members of the elite Bergen County Regional SWAT Team.

  • P.O. Donnelly.

This training utilizes nationally recognized standards, reflecting the significant evolution in law enforcement protocol since events like Columbine. Modern active-shooter tactics have decisively shifted away from perimeter containment to immediate, direct engagement with the threat in order to rapidly minimize loss of life.

Preparing for the Unthinkable

Active-shooter training involves realistic drills and simulations designed to prepare officers to respond effectively to an individual engaged in killing or attempting to kill people in a confined and populated area.

These intensive exercises ensure that Glen Rock officers are prepared to implement immediate response tactics to mitigate harm, neutralize threats, and ultimately save lives within minutes. The GRPD’s dedication to this rigorous, annual training cycle underscores its proactive approach to school and community safety in Bergen County.
