Paramus NJ, Organized Retail Theft Targets Bergen County Mall, a brazen attempt at organized retail theft was shut down this week at the Westfield Garden State Plaza in Paramus, New Jersey, leading to the arrest of two out-of-state suspects carrying thousands of dollars in stolen merchandise.

The incident unfolded on Wednesday afternoon when police and mall security were alerted to suspicious activity involving two individuals who targeted high-end retailers.

The Duo’s Scheme: Stockroom Infiltration and Grab-and-Run

The operation began around 3:20 p.m. at the Loft store, where one suspect, later identified as Richard Paul Williams (44, of Washington, S.C.), allegedly entered a restricted employee stock area and attempted to open lockers. He fled after being confronted by a sales associate.

The duo then moved to Neiman Marcus, where they escalated their scheme:

  1. Williams entered the restricted stockroom area.

  2. He proceeded to the Burberry Coat section and moved merchandise valued at $4,834.00 near a register.

  3. His female accomplice, London M. Sutton (29, of Severna Park, Md.), allegedly grabbed the coats and left the store.

Foot Chase and Arrest by Paramus Police

The pair exited the mall, but Paramus police officers were already tracking them. When police approached Williams, he attempted to flee on foot, resulting in a brief chase.

Detective Nicholas Perna and Sergeant Ryan Hayor successfully pursued and apprehended Williams.

  • Richard Paul Williams was charged with burglary, eluding on foot, and shoplifting.

  • London M. Sutton was charged with shoplifting and hindering apprehension.

Both suspects were subsequently transported to the Bergen County jail. This incident highlights the growing challenge of sophisticated, organized retail theft groups traveling across state lines to target high-value merchandise in major shopping destinations.
