RIDGEWOOD, NJ — The heart of Ridgewood’s downtown is a little dimmer today. The Ridgewood Guild announced with heavy hearts that its founder and longtime executive director, Tony Damiano, passed away on Saturday, December 20, 2025. A tireless advocate for small businesses and the “architect” of many of the village’s most beloved traditions, Damiano leaves behind a legacy of community spirit that transformed the central business district.
A Visionary for the Village
In February 2010, Tony Damiano founded the Ridgewood Guild with a simple but powerful mission: to revitalize the downtown area and bridge the gap between local merchants and residents.
Under his leadership, the Guild became the driving force behind the events that define the Ridgewood experience, including:
-
The Ridgewood International Film Festival: Bringing global cinema to our local theater.
-
Music in the Night: Filling the streets with live performances every summer.
-
Art in the Park: Showcasing local talent at Van Neste Square.
-
Girls’ Night Out: A signature event that boosted local retail and dining.
Tony wasn’t just an administrator; he was a fixture on East Ridgewood Avenue, always ready with a smile, a new idea, or a helping hand for a struggling shop owner.
A Community Rallies for Its Champion
In October 2025, the community learned that Tony was battling a life-threatening illness. The response was immediate and overwhelming. A GoFundMe campaign titled “Support for Tony Damiano” was launched to assist with medical costs and personal expenses.
By the time of his passing on Saturday, the community had raised over $25,000, a testament to the lives he touched.
“Tony has spent years building community and bringing joy to Ridgewood — he’s known and loved by so many,” the campaign organizers shared. “Tony has always been there for Ridgewood — now it’s our turn to be there for Tony.”
Honoring a Lasting Legacy
Tony Damiano’s impact on Ridgewood cannot be overstated. He saw the potential for the village to be more than just a place to shop; he envisioned it as a destination and a home. His work ensured that even during difficult economic times, Ridgewood’s downtown remained vibrant and resilient.
What Residents are Saying:
On social media, tributes are pouring in from business owners and neighbors alike, describing Tony as “the ultimate cheerleader for Ridgewood” and “a man who truly cared about the success of others.”
