“Sorry! We are closed until we can set our merchant/credit card account back.”

Glen Rock NJ, If you headed to Kilroy’s Wonder Market in Glen Rock this week for your usual grocery run, you likely found the doors locked and a series of confusing signs taped to the glass.
As of January 8, the beloved Bergen County staple has officially paused operations. Here is everything we know about why Kilroy’s is closed and what needs to happen before they can reopen their doors to the community.
Why is Kilroy’s Wonder Market Temporarily Closed?
The closure appears to be a two-fold issue involving both internal business operations and local health department protocols.
1. Merchant Account Complications
A handwritten orange sign posted on the front door points to a financial hurdle. The message reads:
“Sorry! We are closed until we can set our merchant/credit card account back.”
In simple terms, a “merchant account” is what allows a business to accept credit and debit card payments. Without this active account, a modern grocery store cannot process transactions, effectively halting sales.
2. Bergen County Health Department Notice
Alongside the store’s own sign is an official notice from the Bergen County Department of Health Services. This notice clarifies that the reopening process isn’t as simple as just flipping the “Open” sign back over.
The health department’s notice states:
-
The store must notify the county before reopening.
-
Permission is required before restocking or reopening.
-
Management must contact the health inspector directly to clear the status.
What This Means for Glen Rock Shoppers
While “financial account complications” might sound alarming, the signs suggest the management is working to rectify the situation. However, because the store has been closed, the Health Department step is a standard safety measure to ensure that perishable inventory is handled correctly before the public is allowed back in.
For a longstanding institution like Kilroy’s, which has served Glen Rock for generations, the community is hopeful for a swift resolution.

Not surprising health dept issue
Too little too late. By not addressing this when it first happened, the owner provided a fertile field for rumors (considering that a hint of this had already appeared in the local press).
But , as the public face of this long time business, why did Jan wait so long to provide a message and why did it have to be presented by a lawyer?
I wonder if they own the property. Can you imagine what that piece of land is worth in the business section. They would make more money by selling the land, releasing it then running a small supermarket that you just can’t keep up with the larger stores. Sometimes you just need to weigh it out. Our place has been in business for a long time. Maybe they just burnt out from it.
I am thinking she is getting squeezed by some Connected developer so she will be forced to sell and then we will see 300 units built – traffic will be a horror show and it will destroy the fabric of this town. We do not want this store to close, we do not want to see some greedy developer get involved – we live here, they don’t care about what they are doing to the towns they invade- they care about profits only
The town has already capitulated.
You have the first site on Rock next to the Bergen county line tracks.
The second site behind the CVS lot near the Main Line tracks.
Coming next, Glen Avenue just south of Rock Road in the old Amica building property across from the post office.
Ask why our HISTORIC borough council is doing JS to even raise the issue on the destruction of our town.
A specialty market like Whole Foods or the Market Basket would be perfect for Glen Rock in this location
It would be more perfect in YOUR town, next to YOUR house.
