Wayne School Board Asks Citizens for Help

Wayne NJ, The Wayne Board of Education is breaking tradition and inviting regular citizens to pull back the curtain on the district’s financial planning. In a move aimed at boosting transparency, the board has approved a new seven-member advisory committee to help navigate the complexities of the upcoming school budget.
Why the Wayne School Budget Advisory Panel Matters
For years, school budget processes have often felt like they happened behind closed doors. This new initiative, approved on February 5, aims to change that by involving a diverse group of stakeholders in the discussion before the final spending plan is approved on May 7.
School Board President Donald Pavlak Jr. emphasized that the goal is to ground the conversation in “real numbers, real constraints, and real needs of students”. By providing facts and fostering transparency, the board hopes to increase community confidence in how public funds are managed.
Who Can Join the Committee?
The board is looking for a broad range of perspectives to fill the seven volunteer seats. The panel will include:
-
One high school student
-
One local business owner
-
One senior citizen or longtime taxpayer
-
Two parents
-
Two residents-at-large
The committee will meet four times over the coming weeks to analyze cost drivers and provide non-binding feedback to the trustees.
The Fiscal Reality: Deficits Across New Jersey
Wayne’s move toward citizen engagement comes as school districts across the state face daunting financial hurdles. While Wayne managed a $7.1 million shortfall last year, other districts are seeing even higher numbers:
-
Hackensack: Estimated $17 million deficit.
-
Montclair: Deficit reaching up to $20 million.
-
Lakewood: Facing tens of millions in debt and state oversight.
Important Dates for Wayne Residents
-
March 5: The district administration will unveil the proposed spending plan.
-
May 7: Final vote on the school budget.
How to Apply: Residents interested in joining the advisory panel can find applications on the Wayne Schools website.
