Wyckoff NJ, Aaroutine evening in Wyckoff took a dangerous turn recently when local emergency services were called to a residential home for what was initially reported as an electrical fire.

Inside the Fire: The Utility Room Incident

Search crews quickly pinpointed the source of the blaze: a lithium-ion battery that had ignited in the home’s utility room.

While lithium-ion batteries power everything from our smartphones to our electric tools, they carry a unique risk of “thermal runaway”—a state where the battery enters an uncontrollable, self-heating cycle. Firefighters successfully extinguished the flames and performed an “overhaul” to ensure no hidden hotspots remained.

Hazmat Response and Mutual Aid

Due to the chemical nature of the fire, Bergen County Hazmat was called to the scene. Specialized teams safely isolated the compromised battery to prevent reignition—a common hazard with lithium-ion technology.

The Wyckoff Volunteer Fire Department extended their gratitude to the mutual aid companies that responded to assist in keeping the neighborhood safe.

How to Prevent Lithium-Ion Battery Fires in Your Home

Utility rooms and garages are common places for charging devices. To keep your home safe, follow these expert guidelines:

  • Use Original Equipment: Only use the battery and charger that came with your device. Aftermarket chargers often lack critical safety regulators.

  • Avoid Overcharging: Unplug devices once they reach 100%. Never leave large batteries (like those for e-bikes or power tools) charging overnight or while you are away.

  • Charge on Hard Surfaces: Avoid charging batteries on pillows, beds, or carpets. Use a flat, non-flammable surface to allow for heat dissipation.

  • Watch for Warning Signs: If a battery feels excessively hot, starts swelling, or gives off a strange odor, stop using it immediately and move it away from flammable materials if safe to do so.
