Forget the long walks and crowded buses. Newark Liberty International Airport (EWR) is officially stepping into the future

Newark NJ, The Port Authority of New York and New Jersey has announced a groundbreaking partnership with three cutting-edge tech firms to test all-electric, self-driving shuttles throughout the spring of 2026. This move is part of a massive overhaul designed to make EWR one of the most technologically advanced travel hubs in the world.
The “Robot Shuttle” Roadmap: Who, When, and How?
Starting in March, a restricted area of Newark Liberty will transform into a high-tech laboratory. The goal? To simulate a high-capacity, multi-vehicle network that can navigate the “organized chaos” of a major international airport.
The testing schedule is set:
-
March 2026: Oceaneering kicks off the trials.
-
Late March 2026: Ohmio takes over for a two-week sprint.
-
May 2026: Glydways wraps up the spring testing phase.
These aren’t just fair-weather vehicles—all three companies have already passed “adverse weather” tests this winter, proving they can handle the classic New Jersey snow and ice.
Bridging the Gap to the New AirTrain (2030)
While the Port Authority is currently hard at work on the $3.5 billion new AirTrain Newark (scheduled to open in 2030), these autonomous shuttles are being evaluated as a vital link.
As Newark Liberty expands—serving nearly 50 million passengers in 2024—the agency needs a way to move travelers between the upcoming Terminal B and the new AirTrain stations. These zero-emission shuttles could provide a safer, faster, and more eco-friendly alternative to traditional buses.
“We are building a new Newark Liberty that meets the demands of the next generation of travel… we must embrace a future that is inclusive of all the different ways we can move this region.” — Kathryn Garcia, Port Authority Executive Director
A Track Record of Innovation
This isn’t the Port Authority’s first rodeo with self-driving tech. New York and New Jersey airports have been leading the charge for years:
-
2022-2023: JFK became the first North American airport to test “platooned” self-driving vehicles.
-
2024: Members of the public actually got to ride in autonomous shuttles at JFK’s long-term parking.
-
2025: Major construction began on the new AirTrain Newark to replace the aging 1996 system.
What This Means for You
If these 2026 tests are successful, a formal request for proposals will likely be issued in 2027. By the time the new Terminal B and AirTrain are fully operational, your “airport commute” could be handled by a fleet of silent, electric, autonomous pods, cutting down the current 15-minute walks to just a few minutes of futuristic comfort.
