Are Artificial Turf Risks Being Downplayed? Ridgewood Parents Raise Concerns
the staff of the Ridgewood blog
Ridgewood NJ, The debate over artificial turf in Ridgewood has taken a “disquieting” turn following the recent Joint Fields Committee meeting. As the community weighs the pros and cons of synthetic versus natural grass, comments made by Superintendent Dr. Mark Schwarz have sparked a wave of questions regarding student safety and scientific transparency.
The “Shower and Wash” Strategy: Enough Protection?
During the meeting, Dr. Schwarz reportedly suggested that basic hygiene—specifically, showering and laundering sports gear immediately after play—might serve as an adequate mitigation strategy for the risks associated with artificial turf.
For many parents and environmental advocates, this raises a red flag. While hygiene is important, it doesn’t address the primary concerns associated with synthetic fields:
-
Inhalation of crumb rubber dust.
-
Chemical leaching (PFAS/“Forever Chemicals”).
-
Extreme heat retention on play surfaces.
A Gap in Scientific Evidence?
Perhaps the most controversial moment of the meeting was the Superintendent’s claim that he has yet to find scientific evidence linking artificial turf to long-term medical issues.
This stance seems at odds with a growing body of research. Organizations such as Mount Sinai’s Children’s Environmental Health Center have long advocated for natural grass over synthetic surfaces, citing concerns over carcinogens and endocrine disruptors. The discrepancy between the district’s leadership and environmental health experts has left many meeting attendees—and the broader Ridgewood community—feeling uneasy.
Why This Matters for Ridgewood
When leadership appears to dismiss scientific concerns, it creates a “trust gap.” If the community is to move forward with field renovations, the decision must be backed by a comprehensive understanding of modern environmental science, not just anecdotal mitigation tactics.
What do you think? Should the district pause field plans until a more rigorous independent health study is conducted?

Foot in mouth syndrome strikes again!
Sounds like something was taken way out of context.
Ridiculous claim. He should stay in his lane. In addition to the chemical/toxic concerns, injuries are an additional concern. Look no further than FIFA and the 2026 World Cup.
FIFA requires all matches to be played on natural grass to limit player injuries and install temporary natural grass
at all 16 host stadiums, including Met Life , converting turf fields to grass.
He says what people want to hear.
He is a no action guy. Just wants to please every one by saying what they want to hear.
So what he said probably was based on who his audience was
100%
Show us the scientific study that supports ur irresponsible claim that good hygiene is all u need to shield a child athlete from artificial turf toxins
How did this guy get to be superintendent?
He doesn’t realize he’s being used .
Arrogance, likely
May the Schwarz be with you!
