Hasbrouck Heights NJ, a tragic night on Interstate 80 has ended in a lengthy prison sentence for a Hasbrouck Heights man. Bergen County Prosecutor Mark Musella announced that Julio C. Guerrero-Brito, 41, has been sentenced for the 2024 vehicular homicide that claimed the life of 37-year-old Richard M. Bahamonte.
The sentencing marks the conclusion of a harrowing case that highlights the devastating consequences of drunk driving and excessive speed on New Jersey highways.
The Fatal Night: A Heroic Effort in Vain
The incident occurred in the early morning hours of Saturday, February 24, 2024. New Jersey State Troopers were dispatched to a single-car wreck on I-80 Eastbound in Teaneck. Upon arrival, they found a 2022 Honda Accord mangled and blocking two lanes of traffic.
The scene described by first responders was chilling:
-
The Driver: Guerrero-Brito was found asleep in the driver’s seat.
-
The Victim: Passenger Richard M. Bahamonte was discovered unconscious with no pulse.
-
The Cause: Investigation revealed the vehicle was traveling at a high rate of speed when it lost control and slammed into a concrete barrier.
Despite immediate life-saving efforts and CPR performed by State Troopers and paramedics from Holy Name Medical Center, Mr. Bahamonte was tragically pronounced dead at the scene.
Double the Legal Limit
The investigation into the crash uncovered a startling level of intoxication. Toxicological reports confirmed that Guerrero-Brito had a blood alcohol concentration (BAC) of .156%—nearly double the legal limit in New Jersey.
On December 1, 2025, Guerrero-Brito pleaded guilty to second-degree vehicular homicide, admitting to recklessly operating his vehicle while under the influence.
The Sentence: 85% Rule in Effect
On Friday, February 27, 2026, Superior Court Judge James M. Doyle handed down the final sentence:
-
Term: Six years in New Jersey State Prison.
-
The No Early Release Act (NERA): Because the crime falls under NERA, Guerrero-Brito must serve at least 85% of his sentence (roughly 5 years and 1 month) before he is eligible for parole.
“This sentence brings a measure of justice for Mr. Bahamonte and his family,” stated Prosecutor Musella, who commended the New Jersey State Police and the Teaneck Volunteer Ambulance Corps for their professional response to the tragedy.
