The Travel Controversy: Public vs. Private Funding

the staff of the Ridgewood blog

Trenton NJ, the core of the recent debate centers on travel. During Phil Murphy’s two terms as governor, Choose New Jersey sponsored 11 international economic development trips. While the non-profit footed the bill for the governor’s expenses, New Jersey taxpayers were responsible for the costs associated with his entourage, including security teams and staff.

Public records obtained through requests revealed significant taxpayer expenditures:

  • Security & Advisers: The costs included travel for members of the executive protection unit and top policy advisers.

  • Communications Staff: Nearly $80,000 was spent on communications personnel to handle press conferences, interviews, and digital content creation while abroad.

Proponents argue these trips are essential for a global marketplace. “We live in a global marketplace,” says Benjamin Dworkin of the Rowan Institute for Public Policy & Citizenship. “You want to be able to sell the state as welcoming to new business both from other states and internationally.”

The Economic Impact Question

Choose New Jersey reports impressive figures—citing $13.8 billion in capital investment and thousands of jobs created or retained since its inception. However, critics point to the “fuzzy” nature of the partnership:

  • Marketing Grants: The state Department of State has provided millions in grants to the organization to promote business relocation.

  • Federal Funding: The non-profit also utilized nearly $1.7 million in federal pandemic relief funding.

As with any major economic initiative, the question remains: are the results commensurate with the public cost? While memorandums of understanding (MOUs) and partnership agreements are frequently signed during these missions, the direct, long-term financial impact on the average New Jersey taxpayer remains a subject of ongoing debate. New Jersey Ranks Dead Last In the region in cost competitiveness and business taxes.

Looking Toward the Future

With a new administration taking the helm, the relationship between the Governor’s office and Choose New Jersey will be under the microscope. Will the state continue to lean on this government-adjacent model, or will the new administration demand more stringent separation between private lobbying interests and public-funded travel?

One thing is certain: as New Jersey continues to navigate a competitive global economy, the public will be watching closely to see how its leaders manage the cost—and the influence—of these global missions.

  1. I would imagine the wannabee Senator with no qualifications is super busy these days!

Not with volunteer work, mind you…likely no time for something silly like that.

It’s probably daily Pilates, berating the staff at the villas in Tuscany and Costa Rica, redecorating the interior of Phil’s private jet, and botox.

The little people have no idea how hard it is to juggle all of that! Be impressed!

    1. No time for the teeth?

  2. What about the teeth?

    1. Both of them need work………….

  3. Phil is getting the new teeth ready for his big Presidential campaign in 2028.

Tammy will 100% make him run, whether he wants to or not.
