Ethics Complaint Filed Against Gov. Sherrill Over Controversial “Report ICE” Portal

Trenton NJ, A significant legal and political firestorm is brewing in New Jersey. Governor Mikie Sherrill is facing a formal ethics complaint, with critics alleging that her administration’s initiative to track federal immigration enforcement agents crosses the line from political posturing into potential obstruction of justice.

The “Report ICE” Controversy

At the center of the dispute is a state-launched digital portal, spearheaded by Governor Sherrill and Attorney General Jennifer Davenport, which encourages New Jersey residents to upload cellphone footage of Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) activities.

The portal, which ostensibly aims to report “misconduct” by federal agents—such as excessive force or racial profiling—is being viewed by opponents as a tool to undermine federal operations.

“In a seemingly unprecedented move, Governor Sherrill is using official state resources to coordinate the potential obstruction of federal immigration enforcement activities,” said Curtis Schube, director of research and policy at the Center to Advance Security in America (CASA).

Legal Allegations: Does the Portal Violate Federal Law?

CASA has officially filed a bar complaint with the New York Supreme Court’s Attorney Grievance Committee, targeting Sherrill’s standing as a legal professional. The complaint cites 8 U.S.C. Section 1324, which prohibits concealing or shielding individuals who are in the U.S. in violation of law.

The complaint argues that the portal’s function—alerting the public to ICE locations—effectively provides undocumented immigrants with the opportunity to evade federal detention. Beyond the federal statute, critics argue that the effort is “deceitful” and inconsistent with the ethical duties expected of an attorney and a sitting governor.

Escalating Tensions with Federal Agencies

The reaction from federal law enforcement has been sharp. The Department of Homeland Security (DHS) has raised alarms, noting that such initiatives heighten the danger for federal officers. DHS Deputy Secretary Lauren Bis highlighted a significant uptick in threats against agents, including a reported 8,000% increase in death threats.

Meanwhile, the U.S. Justice Department has taken direct action, suing the governor last month to block an executive order that sought to restrict ICE raids on state property. A Justice Department spokesperson warned that officials promoting rhetoric that obstructs lawful immigration operations could be putting federal agents in grave harm’s way.

What’s Next for New Jersey?

Governor Sherrill, who has previously drawn controversy for comparing ICE to the former East German secret police (the Stasi), has yet to comment publicly on the specific allegations within the ethics complaint.

As the legal battle intensifies, the core question remains: Where does the boundary lie between state-level administrative oversight and the obstruction of federal law enforcement? With an official ethics investigation potentially on the horizon, this story remains a critical development for both New Jersey politics and national immigration policy.
