GREEN BROOK, NJ —A Milestone for New Jersey Tech. The era of the “flying burrito” has officially arrived in the Garden State. In a historic partnership, Grubhub and Dexa have announced the launch of New Jersey’s very first commercial drone food delivery program, centered right in the heart of Somerset County.
Starting March 18, hungry residents near the Wonder Green Brook location on Route 22 will see a new option in their Grubhub app: “Drone Delivery.” This three-month pilot program marks the first time advanced aerial technology will be used for consumer food logistics in New Jersey.
How It Works: Faster Delivery, Zero Extra Cost
The program is designed to solve the age-old problem of Route 22 traffic. By taking to the skies, Grubhub aims to slash delivery times while keeping costs low for the consumer.
-
The Radius: Delivery is available to eligible customers within a 2.5-mile radius of the Wonder Green Brook location.
-
The Price: There are no additional fees for choosing drone delivery beyond standard service and delivery charges.
-
The Tech: The service utilizes the Dexa DE-2020, a fully automated, FAA-certified aircraft designed for precision and safety.
“This collaboration introduces a faster and more efficient way for New Jersey diners to experience food delivery without compromising safety or reliability,” says Abhishek “PJ” Poykayil, SVP of Customer Delivery Operations at Wonder and Grubhub.
Safety and “The Drop”
For those worried about a drone landing in their flower bed—don’t be. Dexa is one of only four U.S. companies to hold an FAA Part 135 Air Carrier certificate.
The process is high-tech yet non-intrusive:
-
Preparation: Trained flight crews secure the order at the restaurant.
-
Transit: The drone follows FAA-approved flight paths designed to minimize noise.
-
The Delivery: Instead of landing, the drone hovers and lowers the order to the ground using a controlled tether system.
See the Drones in Action: Community Launch Event
Want to see the future before it lands on your doorstep? Grubhub and Dexa are hosting a public demonstration for the Green Brook community.
-
When: March 16 (Rain date: March 17)
-
Times: 12:00 PM and 4:00 PM
-
Where: Wonder Green Brook, Route 22
Following the 90-day trial, Grubhub will evaluate the data to decide if drone delivery will expand to other New Jersey cities and restaurant partners.

Absolutely horrible. The enormous Amazon vans we have to drive behind or around all day are enough.
