BERGEN COUNTY, NJ — Local law enforcement agencies, including the Wyckoff and Carlstadt Police Departments, are issuing an urgent warning to North Jersey residents: That “Official Court Notice” in your mailbox might be a high-tech trap.
Scammers are now using sophisticated fake documents, complete with official-looking state seals, to trick residents into scanning QR codes that lead to identity theft and financial loss.
How the ‘Parking Violation’ Scam Works
According to police, the scam arrives as a physical letter that appears to be from a county court. The document claims the recipient has an upcoming hearing for a parking violation and creates a sense of urgency by stating the court date is fast approaching.
To “resolve” the issue or view the case details, the letter directs the victim to scan a QR code.
“This image is NOT a real legal document,” Wyckoff Police warned in a recent social media alert. “It is a fraudulent notice designed to scare people into paying money or sharing personal information.”
The Danger of the QR Code Trap
Scanning a fraudulent QR code can lead to several dangerous outcomes:
-
Phishing Sites: You may be directed to a fake government website designed to steal your Social Security number or credit card info.
-
Malware: The code could trigger an automatic download of “spyware” onto your smartphone.
-
Instant Payments: Scammers often use these codes to direct victims to untraceable payment apps like Zelle, Venmo, or Bitcoin.
How to Protect Yourself: Tips from Bergen County Police
Law enforcement officials suggest these three steps to stay safe:
-
Verify via Official Channels: Never use the contact info or links provided in a suspicious letter. Look up the official phone number for the Wyckoff or Bergen County Court independently.
-
Inspect the Seal: While scammers use “official-looking” seals, they often contain typos or slight variations from the actual New Jersey State Seal.
-
Think Before You Scan: Treat a QR code from an unknown source with the same caution you would an attachment in a spam email.
“Help spread awareness and protect others from falling victim to these ongoing scams,” urge local officials. Share this post with your neighbors and elderly family members who may be specifically targeted.
