Englewood NJ, A chaotic scene unfolded at the Cross at Creek Pointe Condominium complex on Thursday, March 19, when a high-speed crash nearly turned into a multi-unit tragedy. What began as a DUI incident quickly escalated into a life-threatening fire and a desperate mental health crisis.
A Night of Chaos at Cross at Creek Pointe
In the late hours of Thursday, Englewood police responded to reports of a violent car crash within the residential complex. Upon arrival, officers found a vehicle engulfed in flames in dangerously close proximity to residential homes.
According to authorities, the driver—who was found to be highly intoxicated and suicidal—not only caused the wreck but actively attempted to run into the growing inferno.
Heroic Actions by Englewood Police and EMTs
The situation required split-second decision-making from local law enforcement and emergency medical technicians:
-
Life-Saving Evacuations: Because the fire was so close to the buildings, officers were forced to kick in doors to alert sleeping residents. They physically escorted families to safety as the heat intensified.
-
A Dangerous Rescue: While the fire spread, EMTs and officers had to physically subdue the driver to prevent them from entering the flames.
-
Rapid Fire Containment: The Englewood Fire Department arrived shortly after, battling the blaze before it could leap from the vehicle to the structural walls of the condos.
“Thankfully, no one was hurt during this very chaotic incident,” Englewood Police stated in a follow-up. “We appreciate the work of all the first responders who worked together to keep everyone safe.”
The Aftermath: Damage and Charges
Despite the intensity of the fire, police confirmed that the quick response of the fire department minimized structural damage. Residents were cleared to return to their homes shortly after the blaze was extinguished.
The driver was transported to a local hospital for medical and psychiatric evaluation and is facing multiple charges related to the DUI and the endangerment of the community.
