A years-long legal saga involving a former New Jersey art teacher and a middle school student has reached its final chapter. Following a criminal conviction for a sexual relationship with a minor, the State Board of Examiners has officially stripped Amy D’Ovidio of her teaching credentials. Here are the details of the “brazen” case that shocked the Garfield community.

GARFIELD, N.J. — The New Jersey Department of Education has moved to permanently revoke the teaching licenses of Amy D’Ovidio, a former art teacher in the Garfield school district. The decision, finalized by the State Board of Examiners on March 6, 2026, ensures that D’Ovidio will never again hold a position in a New Jersey classroom.

The Crimes and the Conviction

D’Ovidio, who had held a standard teacher of art certificate since 2012, was at the center of a disturbing investigation involving a student between the ages of 13 and 16.

Assistant Prosecutor Robert Graber described D’Ovidio’s actions as “extremely brazen behavior,” noting that the sexual relationship took place while she was employed as a middle school educator.

Timeline of the Legal Proceedings:

  • June 2025: D’Ovidio pleaded guilty to the charges before State Superior Court Judge James Doyle.

  • December 2025: She was sentenced to a five-year suspended prison term. Under this agreement, she will not serve time behind bars unless she violates the conditions of her release or commits another crime.

  • March 6, 2026: The State Board of Examiners officially revoked her 2010 and 2012 teaching certificates.

The Victim’s Courageous Choice

During the sentencing, the prosecution highlighted the resilience of the victim. Despite the significant impact of the events, the student has reportedly made strides in moving forward with his life.

Prosecutor Graber shared that the victim’s primary motivation for cooperating with the investigation was selflessness: “He was hopeful that this would not happen to any other students moving forward.”

A Career Ended by Misconduct

As part of her initial plea deal, D’Ovidio agreed to forfeit her teaching license. While she offered an apology during her sentencing for her “behavior,” the state’s move to revoke her credentials acts as a formal and permanent barrier to her return to the education sector.

This case serves as a stark reminder of the stringent oversight maintained by the New Jersey Department of Education regarding teacher misconduct and the protection of minors within the state’s school systems.

  1. In all fairness.. she gets a 5 year ‘suspended’ sentence meaning zero jail time.
If it was a male teacher do you think he would get a ‘suspended sentence’
