Artemis II Splashdown: Astronauts Return from the Moon as NASA Conquers Heat Shield Fears

SAN DIEGO — Mission accomplished. After a historic 10-day journey around the Moon, the Artemis II Orion capsule successfully splashed down in the Pacific Ocean at 8 p.m. ET yesterday, marking a massive milestone in humanity’s return to the lunar surface.
The four-person crew landed roughly 50 miles off the coast of San Diego, concluding a mission that pushed both human endurance and spacecraft engineering to the limit.
A High-Stakes Reentry
The return was the mission’s most dangerous phase. The Orion capsule hit Earth’s atmosphere at a staggering 25,000 miles per hour. During the descent, the spacecraft’s exterior endured temperatures of 5,000 degrees Fahrenheit—nearly half the heat of the sun’s surface.
The successful landing brings a sigh of relief to NASA engineers. After the uncrewed Artemis I mission in 2022 saw unexpected charring and “skipping” on its heat shield, experts were concerned about how the hardware would hold up with a human crew on board. To mitigate the risk, NASA revised the reentry flight path for Artemis II, successfully shielding the astronauts from the most extreme thermal exposure.
What’s Next: The Road to Artemis III and IV
With Artemis II in the books, NASA is shifting its focus to the next giant leaps:
- Artemis III (2027): This mission will focus on testing lunar landers in Earth’s orbit to ensure docking and landing systems are foolproof.
- Artemis IV (2028): The big one. NASA expects this mission to officially land humans on the Moon for the first time in over five decades.
Future Orion spacecraft are expected to feature redesigned heat shields based on the data gathered from yesterday’s successful splashdown. For now, the Artemis II crew is headed for medical evaluations and a well-deserved homecoming.

An awe-inspiring event. Anyone who missed it live would do well to watch the video, as a reminder of America’s engineering greatness, and ability to set aside, even for one day, the political gulf that has consumed so many.
