PATH Fare Hikes

Hoboken NJ, If you rely on the PATH train to get between New Jersey and New York City, your morning routine is about to look—and cost—a little different. Starting May 4, 2026, riders will see the second fare increase in two years, but there’s a major silver lining: the most significant service expansion in nearly a quarter-century.

Here is everything you need to know about the new fares, the end of the “Hoboken Detour,” and the tech upgrades coming to your station.

The Price of Progress: New PATH Fares

Starting May 4, the cost of a single-use ride on the PATH will increase by 25 cents.

  • New Fare: $3.25 per ride

  • Previous Fare: $3.00 (which was increased from $2.75 in January 2025)

Why the hike? The Port Authority is reinvesting these funds into the 118-year-old system. The goal is to move away from “patchwork” fixes and toward a faster, safer, and more reliable transit experience.

The “PATH Forward” is Complete

The fare hike comes on the heels of the $430 million PATH Forward program. This two-year modernization project has officially wrapped up, resulting in:

  • Three miles of brand-new rail tracks.

  • Station Renovations: Comprehensive upgrades at four major stations.

  • Better Cars: Overhauled rail cars for a smoother ride.

Major Service Win: The End of the Weekend Detour

For the first time in nearly 25 years, the PATH is returning to a full seven-day service schedule on all four lines. Starting May 17, weekend commuters will finally get their time back.

Key Weekend Changes:

  • Direct Hoboken to WTC: No more complicated transfers.

  • Direct Journal Square to 33rd Street: Direct access returns, ending the long-standing “Hoboken Detour” for Jersey City riders.

  • Increased Frequency: More trains will run during rush hours and late-night windows to reduce platform crowding.

TAPP Into Unlimited Savings

Technology is also getting a boost. Starting May 3, the TAPP fare card system will finally support unlimited passes.

  • New Options: You can now load 1-day, 7-day, and 30-day unlimited passes onto your TAPP card.

  • ADA Upgrades: Keep an eye out for a new pilot program testing redesigned, ADA-compliant fare gates to make stations more accessible for everyone.

“The return of seven-day service… is a major milestone for our riders and our region,” says Port Authority Chairman Kevin O’Toole.
