Washington DC, The latest data from the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics is in, and while the pace of inflation slowed slightly compared to March, Americans are still feeling the heat at the pump and the grocery store.

The Consumer Price Index (CPI) rose 0.6% in April 2026. While this is a step down from the 0.9% jump seen in March, the annual inflation rate has climbed to 3.8%, up from 3.3% just a month ago.

What’s Driving the Surge?

If you feel like your monthly budget is under attack, you aren’t imagining it. Two major categories accounted for the lion’s share of the April increase:

  • Energy Prices Spike: Energy costs jumped 3.8% in April alone. In fact, energy accounted for over 40% of the total monthly increase in the CPI. Over the last year, energy costs have skyrocketed by a staggering 17.9%.

  • Housing & Shelter: The cost of keeping a roof over your head continues to climb, with the shelter index rising 0.6% this month.

The Grocery Store and Beyond

Food prices are also on the move. The total food index increased 0.5% in April. Interestingly, “food at home” (groceries) rose by 0.7%, while “food away from home” (dining out) saw a more modest 0.2% increase.

Other categories on the rise:

  • Airline fares

  • Apparel and Personal Care

  • Education

  • Household furnishings

Any Good News?

It wasn’t all bad news for consumers. A few major categories actually saw price decreases in April, providing a small amount of relief:

  • New Vehicles

  • Medical Care

  • Communication Services

The Bottom Line

“Core inflation”—which excludes the volatile food and energy sectors—rose 0.4% in April. This suggests that while energy is the main culprit right now, price pressures are still simmering across a broad range of goods and services.

With annual inflation now sitting at 3.8%, all eyes will be on the Federal Reserve to see how these numbers influence future interest rate decisions.
