Newark NJ, Air safety officials are on high alert following a disturbing incident in the skies over New Jersey. On Wednesday night, a United Airlines flight crew reported being targeted by a green laser while on approach to Newark Liberty International Airport (EWR), sparking an immediate federal investigation.
Midnight Danger: The Incident Details
At approximately 11:25 p.m. on Wednesday, May 13, 2026, the flight crew noticed a bright green laser beam illuminating the cockpit. At the time of the strike, the aircraft was located roughly 14 miles away from the airport.
While the flight was able to land safely at Newark without further incident, the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) warns that these events are far from harmless pranks. A laser strike can instantly distract, disorient, or even temporarily blind a pilot during critical phases of flight, such as takeoff or landing.
The Legal Consequences: Fines and Prison Time
Shining a laser at an aircraft is a serious federal crime. The FAA works closely with local law enforcement to track down violators, who face life-altering penalties:
-
Civil Fines: Up to $11,000 per violation.
-
Criminal Penalties: Up to five years in federal prison.
-
Major Fines: Federal penalties can reach $250,000, in addition to state and local charges.
A Downward Trend, But the Risk Remains
The FAA reported that pilots across the country cited 10,993 laser strikes in 2025. While this represents a 14% decrease from the previous year, the agency remains vigilant in its “Zero Tolerance” policy.
Local law enforcement agencies have been notified of the Newark incident, and the investigation is currently active. The FAA continues to urge the public to report any suspicious laser activity to both the FAA and local police departments immediately.
