The War on “Forever Chemicals”: Ridgewood Water Pushes Unprecedented PFAS Safeguards Amid Major Federal Offensive

Glen Rock NJ, A major shift in clean drinking water standards is unfolding from Washington D.C. down to the local municipal taps of North Jersey.
At the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) headquarters, EPA Administrator Lee Zeldin alongside U.S. Health and Human Services (HHS) Secretary Robert F. Kennedy Jr. announced the federal government’s most comprehensive offensive yet against per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances—commonly known as PFAS or “forever chemicals.”
Flanked by EPA Assistant Administrator for Water Jessica Kramer and an expert panel on cutting-edge PFAS destruction technology, federal leaders rolled out a comprehensive life-cycle strategy built on three core pillars:
-
Follow the law aggressively to hold polluters accountable.
-
Follow the science regarding long-term human health impacts.
-
Provide water utility systems with concrete, stable standards they can build a compliance program around with total confidence.
While the EPA has given water systems nationwide until 2031 to meet strict safety criteria, Ridgewood Water is already years ahead of the curve, deploying a massive $150 million localized infrastructure overhaul.
Local Impact: Glen Rock Welcomes Massive Carbon Filtration Vessels
Putting those federal goals into immediate local action, the Main PFAS Treatment Facility in Glen Rock, NJ recently took delivery of two massive granular activated carbon (GAC) vessels.
These specialized filtration tanks are the gold standard in environmental engineering for trapping and removing chemical contaminants from drinking water. When this state-of-the-art facility becomes fully operational by the end of 2026, it will boast the capacity to treat up to 360,000 gallons of water per day.

Surpassing EPA Standards Four Years Ahead of Schedule
Ridgewood Water’s aggressive proactive strategy is rapidly nearing completion across its entire service footprint:
-
By the End of 2026: 11 of Ridgewood Water’s 12 planned PFAS Treatment Facilities are scheduled to be fully online and operating.
-
Undetectable Levels: Once running, these facilities will reduce all regulated PFAS compounds in treated water to undetectable levels—completely smashing the rigid EPA standard of 4 parts per trillion (ppt).
-
April 2027 Completion: The 12th and final treatment facility is expected to be fully operational by Spring 2027.
Once entirely complete, this monumental $150 million systemwide infrastructure project will bring Ridgewood Water into full federal compliance a staggering four years ahead of the EPA’s mandatory 2031 deadline.
For residents in the service area, it means peace of mind at the tap today, well ahead of national mandates.
