Parking Deck Ambush: 3 Charged in Violent American Dream Mall Assault That Left Three Injured

East Rutherford NJ, A Sunday evening trip to the American Dream mall turned into a scene of violence this past weekend, leaving three people injured and triggering a multi-state police response.

New Jersey State Police have officially arrested and charged two adults and a teenager following a violent confrontation in one of the East Rutherford mega-mall’s parking structures on Sunday, May 24, 2026.


What Happened in Parking Deck A?

The incident unfolded at approximately 7:18 p.m. on Sunday night. State Police troopers dispatched to the American Dream mall’s Parking Deck A were met by mall security guards and three bloodied victims.

According to State Police spokeswoman Caitlin Brennan, a physical altercation had broken out inside the parking garage. After inflicting injuries on the three victims, the attackers immediately fled the scene.

Witnesses and victims managed to provide authorities with a critical piece of evidence before the trail went cold: the suspects had sped away in a black GMC truck sporting a New Jersey license plate.


The Arrests: Suspects Tracked Down by State Police

Utilizing the vehicle description and license plate data, investigators quickly tracked the suspects to a residential home—though police have not yet disclosed the exact city where the hideout was located.

Three individuals were taken into custody and face varying degrees of assault charges:

  • Mohammad Mahmoud (23) of Guttenberg, NJ: Charged with Aggravated Assault.

  • Salem Yasir (19) of Guttenberg, NJ: Charged with Aggravated Assault.

  • 16-Year-Old Juvenile of Germantown, MD: Charged with Simple Assault.

Following their arrests, the two adult suspects, Mahmoud and Yasir, were transported directly to the Bergen County Jail, where they are currently being held pending a formal detention hearing. The 16-year-old minor was processed and subsequently released into the custody of a legal guardian.


Investigation Remains Ongoing

As of Tuesday, May 26, 2026, the New Jersey State Police have kept tight-lipped about the exact motive behind the attack or whether the victims and suspects knew each other prior to the parking deck encounter. The condition of the three injured victims has also not been made public.
