GLEN ROCK, NJ — High school events are usually all about fun, but the Glen Rock Police Department and Glen Rock Public Schools teamed up last week to deliver a powerful, hands-on lesson about safety during this year’s highly anticipated Rock Fest 2026.
In my day ‘Beer Goggles’ would often give you a distorted view of someone you might to flirting with . In an effort to visually and physically demonstrate the severe dangers of impaired driving, local police officers brought a unique challenge to the student body: fatal vision “drunk goggles.” ### The Golf Cart Challenge: Cones Down, Reality Up Designed to perfectly mimic the real-world effects of alcohol intoxication on a person’s balance, depth perception, and coordination, the goggles gave students a sobering perspective.

After slipping on the eyewear, students were placed behind the driver’s seat of golf carts to navigate a tightly monitored cone course. The results were immediate and eye-opening:
-
Dozens of cones were struck.
-
Carts repeatedly veered completely off-course.
-
Students experienced firsthand how quickly alcohol strips away control behind the wheel.
The interactive simulation effectively proved just how unpredictable and lethal an impaired driver becomes on real Bergen County roads.
Failing the Field Sobriety Test
The exercise didn’t stop at the golf cart course. Glen Rock officers also put the students through standard Roadside Standardized Field Sobriety Tests (SFSTs)—the exact physical coordination tests used by law enforcement during a real-world DWI investigation.
Faced with walking a straight line and standing on one leg while wearing the goggles, student balance quickly dissolved.
“Let’s just say many of them would have ended up in handcuffs with their lack of balance using the goggles,” the Glen Rock Police Department noted in a statement following the event.
By merging interactive learning with real-world law enforcement procedures, Glen Rock High School succeeded in turning a festival day into an unforgettable life lesson. Thanks to the collaboration between our local schools and first responders, the next generation of Glen Rock drivers is better equipped to make smart, safe choices.

Glad to see Chief Trover and his team continuing the kind of community programs that Chief Ackerman championed, while putting their own spin on them. That commitment to building strong relationships with residents makes a difference. The two chiefs before them never seemed nearly as interested in these efforts.
this is dumb. beer goggles isn’t about drunk driving. it’s about not picking up fatties at closing time.
