This Jersey-Bred Grass is Taking Over the World Cup—But Missing from MetLife Stadium

East Rutherford NJ, A massive win for New Jersey science is unfolding on the world stage this weekend. When the 2026 FIFA World Cup matches kick off, players across North America will be running, sliding, and scoring on a specialized, high-tech strain of turfgrass developed right here in the Garden State by Rutgers University researchers.
Rutgers’ cool-season turfgrass has been successfully installed in 10 World Cup host stadiums, meeting FIFA’s most brutal and exacting standards for durability, consistency, and athletic performance.
The Masters Behind the Turf: Rutgers Turfgrass Breeding Program
The World Cup’s chosen surface is the result of decades of intense cultivation. The strain was engineered by plant biologist Stacy Bonos, director of the world-renowned Rutgers Turfgrass Breeding Program, and rigorously tested by James Murphy, an extension specialist in Rutgers’ plant biology department.
To ensure the grass could handle the absolute pummel of elite soccer cleats, Murphy’s team tested the turf using a specialized machine equipped with heavy rubber paddles designed to simulate intense match play.
Where is the Rutgers Grass Being Used?
The premium blend—a proprietary mix of Blue Note, Bolt, and Legend Kentucky bluegrass varieties—is providing a uniform playing surface across North America, including:
-
United States: Philadelphia (Lincoln Financial Field), Boston (Gillette Stadium), Atlanta, Dallas, Houston, Los Angeles, and Seattle.
-
International Venues: Mexico City and Toronto.
Why FIFA Demands High-Tech Turf
Soccer at this level is entirely dependent on the ground beneath the players’ feet. FIFA-appointed experts selected the Rutgers strain because it satisfies strict new mandates ensuring the ball responds identically across entirely different climates.
The stacked, multi-layered setup features reinforced sod and a complex underground root zone that provides precision ventilation and drainage. It must withstand:
-
The Pummel of Cleats: It cannot rip or tear during high-velocity turns.
-
Extreme Weather: Keeping a consistent texture through extreme summer heat or sudden tropical downpours.
-
Perfect Playability: Offering the exact mathematical balance of bounce and traction for 48 competing international teams.
The MetLife Stadium Twist: Why NJ’s Home Venue Missed Out
Despite the massive success across the continent, Bonos expressed disappointment that the Rutgers-bred grass will not be featured at New Jersey’s own MetLife Stadium in East Rutherford. MetLife is scheduled to host seven major tournament matches starting Saturday, June 13, alongside the highly anticipated World Cup Final on July 19.
While the state originally contracted a South Jersey company based in Hammonton to grow and install the local Rutgers strain, harsh winter weather conditions disrupted the schedule. As a result, the facility had to pivot, installing a replacement turf grown in North Carolina instead.
Breeding for Future Climates (and Chasing Geese)
Developing world-class turf is a long game. Bonos and her team manage over 51,000 plots across two research farms in Freehold and North Brunswick, alongside a campus lab that uses DNA mapping to identify top-performing genes. The biggest hurdle? Climate change. Breeders must accurately predict global weather shifts 10 to 15 years before a grass variety ever hits commercial production.
And the science doesn’t stop at weather. The team also runs a high-tech security operation to protect their research from local geese, utilizing drones, loudspeakers playing predator sounds, and remote-controlled boats to keep the birds from eating a year’s worth of genetics overnight.
Beyond the World Cup, this elite Jersey turf is already showcased at international golf courses and structural landmarks like the Washington Monument in Washington, D.C.
