Paramus NJ, A volatile, life-or-death emergency in Paramus ended safely thanks to the quick thinking, restraint, and professionalism of seven local heroes.
Paramus Police Chief Robert M. Guidetti and Deputy Chief Frank S. Scott have proudly announced that seven members of the Paramus Police Department were awarded the prestigious Exceptional Duty Medal by the Bergen County Police Chiefs Association. The medals were officially presented during the graduation ceremony at the Bergen County Police Academy.
Here is how these officers successfully managed a high-stakes crisis and prevented a tragedy.
The Incident: High-Stakes Crisis Defused with Extreme Restraint
The award stems from a recent emergency call involving an individual in severe psychological distress. Paramus police officers arrived on the scene to find a person who was actively suicidal and armed with edged weapons.
Almost immediately upon their arrival, the situation began to rapidly escalate, putting both the individual and the responding personnel in imminent danger.
Recognizing the extreme severity of the crisis, the officers quickly executed critical incident protocols to protect everyone involved:
-
Specialized Units Deployed: Officers immediately mobilized the Emergency Services Unit (ESU).
-
Mental Health Resources: A crisis negotiator and on-call mental health personnel were rushed to the scene to assist.
Through a masterful balance of tactical restraint, teamwork, and compassionate de-escalation, the officers defused the tension without relying on lethal force. Their coordinated efforts directly prevented serious injury and saved a human life.
