PARAMUS, NJ — Local commuters faced a chaotic morning rush on Wednesday, July 15, after a sudden vehicle fire forced a partial shutdown of Route 4, sending traffic into a standstill and leaving behind major backups.
The blaze erupted at approximately 7:30 a.m., right at the peak of the morning rush hour. Emergency responders rushed to the scene to extinguish the flames. While crews managed to put out the fire and reopen all lanes, the disruption rippled across Bergen County’s busiest highways.
Lingering Commute Backups Near Route 17 Interchange
Even after the physical lanes were cleared, navigating the area remained a headache for motorists well into the mid-morning.
According to real-time traffic maps provided by the New Jersey Department of Transportation (NJDOT), heavy congestion continued to snarl eastbound Route 4 near the critical Route 17 interchange in Paramus. Additional slowdowns and bumper-to-bumper delays were also visible on nearby connecting stretches of Route 17.
Status Update: As of 9:15 a.m., all lanes have reopened, but drivers are advised to seek alternative routes if possible to avoid residual delays.
Details regarding what triggered the vehicle fire or whether there were any injuries have not yet been released by local authorities.
This is a developing story. We will provide updates as more official information from the Paramus Police Department and NJDOT becomes available.
