High-Profile Whitewater Prosecutor Robert Ray Arrested After SWAT Standoff in Englewood Cliffs

Englewood Cliffs NJ, A prominent attorney known nationally for leading high-profile political investigations in the 1990s was arrested in Bergen County, New Jersey, following a dramatic police response involving a SWAT team.
Robert William Ray, 66, was taken into custody in Englewood Cliffs after authorities say he hid inside his home when officers arrived to execute an arrest warrant.
SWAT Called to Englewood Cliffs Residence
Police originally went to Ray’s Englewood Cliffs home to arrest him on initial charges of simple assault and terroristic threats, according to Englewood Cliffs Acting Police Chief James Tracy.
When officers arrived, Ray failed to answer the door. An officer on the scene spotted Ray inside the home, where he had reportedly hidden himself beneath a staircase.
Because investigators had reason to believe Ray might have access to a shotgun inside the residence, authorities called in the Bergen County Regional SWAT Team to secure the scene and assist in taking him into custody safely.

Who Is Robert Ray? From Clinton Investigations to Legal Career
Robert W. Ray gained national attention in the late 1990s and early 2000s when he succeeded Kenneth Starr as head of the Office of Independent Counsel.
In that role, Ray oversaw major federal investigations into the Whitewater real estate controversy involving former President Bill Clinton and then-First Lady Hillary Clinton. Ray also led the conclusion of the Monica Lewinsky investigation, which ultimately resulted in Clinton’s House impeachment and Senate acquittal. Neither Bill nor Hillary Clinton were ever charged with criminal wrongdoing in the Whitewater inquiry.
Prior to his recent arrest, Ray worked as a partner at Sterlington Law, a international firm with offices in New York, Philadelphia, and the Virgin Islands. Following the arrest, a representative for Sterlington Law confirmed that Ray is no longer affiliated with the firm and declined further comment.
