Major Traffic and Pedestrian Detours Begin Aug. 14 for Center Avenue Bridge Rehabilitation in Fort Lee
the staff of the Ridgewood blog
Fort Lee NJ, Starting Friday, August 14, motorists and pedestrians in Fort Lee should prepare for extended travel delays and detours as the Port Authority of New York and New Jersey begins major rehabilitation work on the northbound Center Avenue bridge over the George Washington Bridge (GWB) approach.
The project will result in lane and sidewalk closures through December 2026. The work is being conducted in stages to keep two travel lanes open throughout construction, though key highway ramps and local access points will be restricted.
What Is Closing?
The long-term project includes closures of the right lanes and sidewalk on the northbound Center Avenue bridge, as well as two key access ramps:
-
The ramp from New Jersey-bound I-95 to Center Avenue
-
The ramp from Center Avenue to New York-bound I-95
This project is part of the Port Authority’s comprehensive $2 billion Restoring the George program—a multi-year initiative featuring 11 distinct projects designed to repair and modernize the world’s busiest vehicular bridge ahead of its 100th anniversary. The adjacent Lemoine Avenue overpass work was successfully completed in 2025.
Once finished, the upgraded Center Avenue overpass will feature improved structural components, enhanced lighting, and safer roadway and pedestrian amenities.
