Washington DC, In a lighthearted podcast exchange, U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio poked fun at Health and Human Services Secretary Robert F. Kennedy Jr.’s reported diet of red meat and fermented vegetables, while playfully defending his own affinity for Pop-Tarts.

Appearing with his wife, Jeanette, on The Katie Miller Podcast, Rubio reacted to host Katie Miller’s question regarding Kennedy’s strict regimen.

“This is a crazy diet,” Rubio joked. “This is a diet that consists of eating sauerkraut and meat. Now you understand, like, this is not a sustainable thing … He has to travel with coolers of sauerkraut! I’m not going to travel the world with a cooler full of sauerkraut. It’s ridiculous. I can’t do it.”

Pop-Tarts: “A Great American Innovation”

While Rubio noted his general support for Kennedy’s “MAHA” (Make America Healthy Again) initiative, his wife quickly pointed out his sweet tooth.

“He eats all the things you should not be eating. Like every single thing,” Jeanette insisted, revealing that Rubio enjoys Pop-Tarts.

“No, I don’t eat Pop-Tarts every day,” Rubio countered, adding with a laugh: “The Pop-Tart is one of the great American innovations in the history of the world, if you think about it. It comes in this beautiful foil package.”

The History of the Pop-Tart

Rubio’s defense of the iconic toaster pastry touches on a staple of American snack history:

  • 1964 Debut: Originally created by Kellogg’s and test-marketed in Cleveland, the pre-cooked rectangular pastries sold out almost immediately. The initial rollout featured unfrosted options like Strawberry and Brown Sugar Cinnamon.

  • 1967 Innovation: Kellogg’s developed a frosted version that could withstand the heat of a toaster without melting, accelerating the product’s market dominance.

  • Modern Expansion: Produced today by Kellanova (formerly Kellogg’s), Pop-Tarts feature more than 100 flavor varieties, maintaining their long-standing presence in American popular culture.
