Ridgewood NJ, Commuters across New Jersey may soon experience significantly more accurate, timely, and streamlined updates regarding their train and bus schedules. Following a recent Industry Day event on August 19, industry experts met with agency leaders to present cutting-edge solutions for modernizing NJ Transit’s customer communications ecosystem.

The event gave technology providers a platform to share ideas and demonstrate interest in the agency’s active Request for Information (RFI), which aims to leverage modern tech—including artificial intelligence—to unify all rider alerts under a single platform.

A Unified Platform for Buses, Trains, and Mobile Alerts

Currently, NJ Transit disseminates rider information across a wide matrix of systems, including digital station signage, onboard displays, the DepartureVision and MyBus portals, mobile apps, SMS alerts, and social media channels.

The goal of the RFI is to bring these disparate channels into one centralized, single-source system capable of delivering:

  • Enhanced Accuracy & Speed: Real-time updates delivered simultaneously across apps, station signs, and text alerts.

  • Artificial Intelligence Integration: Smart automation to speed up operational messaging during sudden delays or schedule changes.

  • Improved Accessibility: Expanded multilingual support and accessible digital formats for all riders.

  • Scalable Architecture: A modern framework designed to easily expand as transit technology evolves.

There are many technology solutions available to make it possible for us to deliver consistently accurate, unified real-time information to customers across every channel,” said NJ Transit President and CEO Kris Kolluri. “I look forward to delivering the kind of timely information our customers expect and deserve.”

What’s Next for the Procurement Process?

The current RFI phase serves as market research to help NJ Transit construct a precise scope of work for its upcoming formal procurement process.

Key dates and milestones include:

  • September 17: Deadline for industry technology submissions.

  • Late 2026 / Early 2027: Launch of the formal vendor procurement process.

  • 2027: Expected contract award to build and deploy the modernized communications platform.

By moving toward an AI-driven, unified communication network, NJ Transit aims to remove the guesswork from daily commutes statewide.
