Delaware Man Charged Following Sexual Assault on Route 17 Bus in Mahwah

Mahwah NJ, A Delaware man faces multiple criminal charges after reportedly assaulting a fellow passenger aboard an interstate bus traveling through Bergen County, New Jersey.

According to Mahwah Police Captain Michael Blondin, the incident occurred around 11:00 p.m. on Sunday along Route 17 South.

Details of the Route 17 Incident

The bus was traveling south from Albany when a male passenger allegedly began typing sexually suggestive messages on his mobile phone and showing them to the woman seated next to him.

Police report that the suspect, identified as 44-year-old Surrune Jones of Wilmington, Delaware, then physically grabbed the victim. When the victim attempted to move and notify the bus driver, Jones blocked her path and physically prevented her from leaving her seat.

Police Intervention and Arrest

The situation came to an end when both the passenger and the bus driver spotted a Mahwah patrol vehicle parked along Route 17 South.

Officer Gregory Lehman was conducting a routine patrol when the bus pulled over beside his vehicle. The victim exited the bus in visible distress and reported the assault immediately.

Officer Lehman took Jones into custody at the scene without further incident.

Legal Status and Charges

Jones has been formally charged with:

• False Imprisonment

Following his arrest, Jones was processed and remanded to the Bergen County Jail. He has since been released pending a scheduled appearance in Bergen County Superior Court.
