Man Spotted Leaving Hasbrouck Heights Route 17 Hotel with ‘Shotgun’ Arrested with Loaded Air Rifle

HASBROUCK HEIGHTS, NJ — A report of an armed man walking out of a Route 17 hotel lobby prompted a swift police response and led to the arrest of an Indiana man on Monday, August 31, authorities confirmed.
The incident occurred around 4:19 p.m. at the Home2 Suites by Hilton on Route 17 South in Hasbrouck Heights, according to Hasbrouck Heights Police Captain John Behr.
Quick Police Response at Home2 Suites
Officers Perez, Thibault, and Connors, along with Detective Olivo, responded immediately to the hotel following 911 reports that a guest was seen leaving the lobby carrying what appeared to be a shotgun.
Upon arrival, officers located the suspect, identified as Eric M. Smith, 42, of Elkhart, Indiana, in the hotel parking lot.
Investigation Reveals Loaded BB Air Rifle
A further investigation revealed that the weapon was not a firearm, but an air rifle BB gun loaded with 4.5mm copper BBs.
Police safely took Smith into custody without incident and secured the air rifle as evidence. He was charged with third-degree possession of a loaded rifle.
Following his arrest, Smith was transferred to the custody of the Bergen County Sheriff’s corrections officers on Tuesday, September 1
