House Republicans Escalate Probe Into New Jersey Noncitizen Voter Registration Failures

Washington DC, A coalition of House Republicans is stepping up its investigation into New Jersey’s noncitizen voter registration scandal. The probe entered a new phase after lawmakers claimed New Jersey Governor Mikie Sherrill failed to answer key questions regarding state registration breakdowns and instead redirected criticisms toward federal leadership.

Representative Jeff Van Drew (R-N.J.), a member of the Republican Study Committee (RSC), indicated that formal consequences may follow after characterizing Governor Sherrill’s official response as politically charged and uncooperative.

“The response that we got from the governor was almost like she took a political mailer and embossed it upon her official letterhead,” Van Drew stated. “As governor of the state of New Jersey, it was beneath her, it was beneath me, and it was unfortunate.”

Oversight Subcommittee Prepares Hearings and Subpoenas

Originally launched via a July 24 inquiry led by Rep. Van Drew and RSC Chairman August Pfluger (R-Texas), the congressional probe requested detailed explanations across 12 specific areas regarding how noncitizens were permitted to register, the scope of the impact, and preventative measures moving forward.

While Governor Sherrill noted that affected residents received mailed notifications, House lawmakers argued the response failed to address core security concerns.

As Chairman of the House Judiciary Committee’s Oversight Subcommittee, Rep. Van Drew announced plans to schedule formal hearings featuring expert witness testimony. Working in tandem with Judiciary Committee Chairman Jim Jordan (R-Ohio), lawmakers are seeking additional state records from Lt. Gov. Dale Caldwell, who oversees New Jersey’s elections.

Van Drew cautioned that if state officials refuse to cooperate, the committee is prepared to consider issuing subpoenas to compel testimony and document production.

Debate Over “Motor-Voter” Laws and the SAVE America Act

At the center of the dispute is the interaction between automatic voter registration policies (“Motor-Voter” laws) and election integrity safeguards.

The White House also weighed in on the exchange, criticizing state leadership for dismissing concerns over election integrity and noncitizen registration checks.
