New Jersey State Police Step Up Enforcement on Roads and Waterways This Labor Day Weekend

Ridgewood NJ, Labor Day weekend traditionally marks the unofficial end of summer, bringing heavy traffic as thousands of New Jersey residents and visitors head to local beaches, state parks, and lakes. With sunny, dry weather forecasted, the New Jersey State Police (NJSP) are urging motorists and boaters to prioritize safety during the holiday travel surge.
To keep highways and waterways safe, the NJSP will significantly increase enforcement details across the state, adding over 100 extra troopers on patrol alongside regularly scheduled shifts.
Targeting Aggressive Driving and DWI
Roadway safety remains a central concern following past holiday periods. During the previous year’s Labor Day holiday, three out of six fatal crashes in New Jersey involved drug or alcohol impairment.

Drivers planning to consume alcohol are strongly advised to use rideshare services like Uber or Lyft, arrange for a designated sober driver, or stay in place to prevent avoidable accidents.
Increased Marine Presence on NJ Waterways
Enforcement will extend to New Jersey’s lakes and coastal waterways through the State Police Marine Services Bureau. Troopers will maintain an enhanced presence to address unsafe boating behaviors, focusing on:

“As summer comes to an unofficial close and many families take advantage of the long weekend to travel or spend time on the water, safety remains our top priority,” stated Jeanne Hengemuhle, Acting Superintendent of the New Jersey State Police. “We all have a responsibility to make safe and responsible decisions, whether behind the wheel or operating a vessel. Every fatality is one too many, and our goal is zero.”
Travelers are encouraged to plan routes in advance, leave extra travel time, and practice responsible behavior on both land and water throughout the holiday.
