Maria Bombace remembers well when the Iraq War started 10 years ago this March, before her son Matt was sent abroad.

She followed the news and “prayed and prayed” for service members, fearing chemical weapons would be used against them. The war initially seemed to be going “fast and well,” she noted.

“I see this anniversary as an opportunity to pause and reflect on the sacrifices our troops are called to make,” said Maria, a member of Ridgewood’s Gold Star Mother’s Day Committee, which honor fallen service members and their families.

Matt, who served two tours in Iraq between 2005 and 2008, regrets the mission was never completely accomplished. He compares the war to Vietnam. But like many others, he still would do it again.
