Reader issues warning on Obamacare and loss of insurance coverage
WARNING: If you have an ‘anniversary date’ AFTER Jan 01-2014 you are most likely in for a big surprise. My date is Feb 2014. Horizon sent a letter stating my plan would no longer be available and prior to that date I should select a new one. HERE IS THE CATCH: If you select a new one NOW, BEFORE DEC 15, 2013, you can most likely duplicate your current coverage/copays/deductibles for another 12 months. Mine is at a higher rate (jumps from 1150 to 1400/month) but hopefully before that expires in Dec 2014 our lawmakers will repeal this disaster of Obamacare. So i’ll cancel my current policy early and pay a bit extra.
The ‘kicker’ on the new available policies is that you CANNOT go out of network and you get wacked with big copays after a deductible. This is in the interest of a ‘lower monthly payment’. For those who are dumb enough to ask ‘how much does it cost me a month’ instead of HOW MUCH IS THE TRUE COST, it fits the bill. (thats how the automakers sell cars to morons with the payment plan-(better read the small print!)
If you are young and healthy is appears to be a savings.
If you want to go to a world class cancer center such as Memorial Sloan Kettering, you are OUT OF LUCK, since they are OUT OF NETWORK.
If you require CT scans, PET scans, XRAYS, bloodwork on a regular basis, you’re screwed since once you meet the $2000 deductable, you are now responsible for 20pct co-insurance.
I suggest you check your benefits to see how much your insurance co paid in the past. For me it was close to $2000 per scan so its big money.
I hope nobody else gets cancer but its a reality and fact of life, and if you get into remission, the followup costs with Obamacare will be substantial.
