“I was at the meeting when those residents agreed to baseball field and a park. They didn’t want townhouse.”
Reader says residents never agreed to a ball field at Schedler
To get to school in Ridgewood, on the other side of 17, my kids wait on West Saddle River Rd each morning for the school bus. before purchasing my home I contacted the town to determine what type of development could happen on the property though I didn’t know the name was Schedler.
With the safety of my children in mind I was happy to hear the property was zoned r125 residential and only single family homes could be built. When the property was available the issue was not town houses but dense affordable housing development and low income housing obligations.
This would be a non-issue if the property were used for a single family home the way it is supposed to be. At no time when the property was being discussed by the town did I think the property was going to be a ball field because this was just one of many ideas discussed.
No one agreed to the ball field and actually people were really upset when the baseball guys put a copy of their plan on display. Those men who attended the meetings were bullies and condescending to the residents of the neighborhood most impacted by their offensive plan to knock down every tree and displace every animal for another unnecessary ball field..
As far as I am concerned leave it exactly as it is and I won’t have to worry about my kids. A passive park is a great idea especially since we have nothing here. Even though the property zone r125 should only have a single family home, given the choice of clear cutting and with a baseball field or townhouses, this area would have been much better off with the townhouses.

PLEASE try to attend the RW Council Meeting this wednesday, Dec 4 at 7:00 to show your support against demolishing the Zabriskie Schedler House (circa 1825)

When are you people going to realize that the residents in this town no longer have any say in what goes on in it?
The Dec. 4 council meeting starts at 7:30. The information disseminated by the neighborhood group is incorrect.
The various sports groups have always tried to bully residents that they need more fields this gas been on going for years. People who want to preserve the property need to turn out in large numbers to win.
Why can’t we recreate Habernickel on this plot of land? The baseball people won’t get their 90 foot field but will get some sort of field plus the neighbors will have some passive space and a nice park area.
#2. If you say so, I know that you would never mislead me.
The town engineer has made comments that are pro ball field. His renditions for the use of the property is predisposed for the inclusion of a 90 foot ball field. Town engineer should be concerned with the elevation of the property which will require clearing and substantial fill at an enormous cost to taxpayers and to the detriment of the homeowners who will be subjected to the flooding changing the topography will cause.
He should also take into consideration and advise elected officials and taxpayers the long term cost of maintainng this ball field. Especially at a time when we are laying off borough employees.
The double whammy to this cost is the devaluation of properties causing lower tax rates.
Keep it the way it is. Give the kids in the neighborhood a small playground and some walking trails. No reason to chage the topography for this.
The elected officials and taxpayers should also consider the cost of bring the house up to code and the long term cost of maintaining this house. A small play ground is grate but if you are worried about long term cost of a baseball field then that worry should transfer to the house. Can’t have your cake and eat it to.
Maybe the house and property can be preserved with county funds. It is an historic landmark, it could be a museum like the old schoolhouse. Memory of a time when farming was big business in Ridgewood. And the rest could be a park & playground.
Haven’t the red group check with the county? I believe they said that they will not fund it and they certainly not fund long term maintenance.
The sense of entitlement from the sports groups never ceases to amaze me.
A hotel would be the best outcome.
No a parking garage
When will we ever have enough fields? It is as if every child is entitled to play any sport in any season.
Refocus people. We need open spaces. All over the town massive developments are planned. Why can’t we keep this property open? Development fever has hit us bad.
History repeats itself.
This same scenario has already played out all over town; Habernickel, Maple, Vets, Hawes, Brookside, etc.
The coup de grace of course was winning the bond referendum a few years back, creating a Master Plan which then justified putting in lights and turf at the HS and then calling it a “stadium”.
Very clever to then say “oh, we lost a field at BF because we needed to move the track.”
They must think we’re stupid.
Years ago the Sports Council targeted the last large forest in Ridgewood – Grove Park.
I knew sports kids that actually cried when they realized that they were the cause of its possible destruction. They felt that destroying such a beautiful park that everyone can enjoy for a select few who could play sports made absolutely no sense.
It seems they are wiser than most adults.
Yes, I remember that mission !
That property is and remains classified as Green Acres.
That hardly deterred the sports gang. They made a run at it anyway.
Their determination should never be underestimated.
