A longtime consumer debate has trickled into the ranks of the Ridgewood Police Department: Is it better to buy or lease a vehicle?

Police officials believe they have zeroed in on a leasing concept that could yield thousands of dollars in savings while reducing the department’s annual operating expenses and general vehicle wear and tear. The proposal would downgrade three vehicles currently used by the top brass, specifically the chief’s sport utility vehicle (SUV) and two detective cars.

According to Sgt. John Chuck, the department is considering a mid-sized sedan model to replace the aging full-sized detective vehicles. The smaller cars are equipped with six-cylinder engines, which generate a better miles-per-gallon efficiency rating than the presently active eight-cylinder vehicles.

  1. jjj they have bikes already no man power to use them.

  2. Didn’t we just buy new cars ?
…the ones with the ugly paint jobs?

  3. I agree those police cars with the ‘swish’ on the side look like shit. Paint them to look like real police cars again.
As far as leasing, the cost of capital*interest rate* is what determines if the lease makes sense, along with the allowable mileage and return provisions. If they have too much mileage or dents, the town will have to pay when they turn them in.
If they bought 3 new cars, and sold them in 3 years, they would have operated ‘under warranty’ and there would be no repair costs. It would, however, be up to the town to then sell them after 3 years in order to recover their equity.
Im glad the Police dept has begun the discussion and its up to the finance folks to see what the best deal for the town is. In a lease, there is another ‘party’ to the transaction, who makes a profit, so its not necessarily a good deal. Just asking ‘how much per month’ is not the only question here.

  4. Those ugly paint jobs were by order of the ex village manager another example of his retarted decision making, the pd had looked into leasing in the past, but found it wasn’t cost effective perhaps there are better deals available now.

  5. no man power, yeah hello.you have 44 cops. what the fuck would you guys do if you had to work in a real bad city. half would cry.

  6. # 6 your an ignoramus end of story.

  7. ok paint the cars yello. then we can see them hiding in the back parking lot’s. all night long.
